Tummy Tuck

Tummy Tuck (abdominoplasty) is a procedure that removes excess loose skin, which occurs frequently as a result of child bearing. Sometimes, the muscle is separated because of the effect of being stretched during pregnancy. An option of this procedure is to realign the muscle together back to the middle.

What kinds of incisions are used for abdominoplasty? The incisions used for a 'standard' abdominoplasty include an incision around the umbilicus (belly button) as well as an incision along the lower abdomen the length of which would need to be decided at the time of consultation with the doctor.

Is the belly button removed?
The belly button is left in place and a small incision is made over the belly button to reattach it to the skin.

What is a 'mini-abdominoplasty'?
A mini-abdominoplasty is a procedure that removes only a small segment of skin. The muscle is not tightened. This procedure is of benefit to only a small, select group of patients.

What information will be given to me during my initial visit?
The doctor will discuss the surgery, examine you, and discuss the options available to you. Detailed diagnosis and photographs will be shown during your consultation.

Liposuction

Liposuction is an ideal procedure for people who want to remove fat from certain areas of their bodies.

Who is a candidate for liposuction?
An ideal candidate for liposuction has localized areas of fat that is resistant to diet and exercise. This candidate should have good elasticity.

What is tumescent liposuction?
Tumescent liposuction involves the injection of a standard IV solution containing a dilute solution of a painkiller, lidocaine and a blood vessel constrictor, epinephrine. The IV solution helps to replace fluids lost during the procedure and the lidocaine reduces pain and the epinephrine reduces blood loss. Many plastic surgeons use this solution in combination with an anesthetic administered by an anesthesiologist. Combining the low concentrations of lidocaine as a local anesthetic with low levels of general anesthetic allows for a safe, controlled manner of minimizing patient’s discomfort during surgery.

How long will I need to wear a garment?
Usually about 6 weeks.

How much fat can be removed?
This would need to be determined after consultation with your plastic surgeon emphasizing safety. Sometimes the plastic surgeon will request that a patient lose weight first in order to have the most ideal of results.
